Our Story
At Unity of Whidbey, we believe in the inherent goodness of all people and the transformative power of spiritual consciousness. We honor the spark of divinity within every individual and recognize that our shared humanity is the ground for our collective growth. Our community is a space for questioning, discovery, and the practical application of spiritual truths in daily life.
Who We Are
Unity of Whidbey is a member of Unity Worldwide Ministries, headquarters at Unity Village outside Kansas City, MO. At this time we are a congregational-run ministry, choosing to function without a hired minister on staff. Instead, we draw from a wide and abundant list of Unity and New Thought speakers available to us locally. This means also, that the day-to-day functioning of our church is done by members of the community, mostly on a volunteer basis. This model provides open and abundant opportunities to be involved in the community for anyone wanting to do so. Or if you just want to stop by on a Sunday morning and have a cup of tea or coffee, WE WELCOME YOU!!
Unity of Whidbey was started in the 1970s by a small group of like-minded, dedicated people who felt it was important to gather in community. They met in Clinton Hall for many years, along with other venues and eventually met in Bayview Hall for several years. In 2009 we broke ground for our own building at 5671 Crawford Road in Langley, moving into the building in the fall of 2009.
Taking care of our holy grounds is our joy and task, requiring a true village.
Our Sunday service is a warm and welcoming experience where we gather to pray, to sing, and to listen to a variety of inspirational speakers. Our service is an audio/visual hybrid so that we can participate either together in our beautiful sanctuary, or remotely by Zoom.

How Unity Began
Unity was founded in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. After Mrs. Fillmore's remarkable healing using prayer and affirmations, many friends became interested in how she accomplished this healing. Unity grew from small prayer circles in living rooms to the worldwide movement it is today.
Charles Fillmore often described Unity as "practical Christianity" or "applied Christianity". In other words, he wanted Unity to provide a deep understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ, so these teachings could be applied to every phase of our daily lives. As we come more in harmony with these teachings, our lives are filled with more health, happiness, security, prosperity, and our relationships are more fulfilling.

What We Believe
Jesus
We believe that Jesus expressed his divine potential and sought to show humankind how to express ours as well. We see Jesus as our BROTHER, a master teacher of universal truths and as our Way Shower. In Unity, we use the term Christ to mean the divinity in humankind. Jesus is the great example of the Christ in expression. Jesus said, “Know ye not that ye are God. All these things that I do and more ye shall do if you just believe.”
The Nature of Humankind
We are each individual, eternal expressions of God. Our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good. Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God expresses in and through our lives.
The Bible
Unity founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore studied the Bible as history and allegory and interpreted it as a metaphysical representation of humankind's evolutionary journey toward spiritual awakening. In addition, Unity recognizes that the Bible is a complex collection of writings compiled over many centuries. We honor the writings as reflecting the understanding and inspiration of the writers at the time they were written. The Bible continues to be a valuable spiritual resource for us.
Prayer and Meditation
Affirmative prayer is the highest form of creative thought. It includes the release of counterproductive, negative thoughts, as well as holding in mind statements of spiritual truth. Through meditation, we experience the presence of God. Prayer and meditation heighten our awareness and thereby transform our lives.
Our Teachings…
Heaven is not a place, but a state of consciousness; we create our own heaven and hell here and now.
We all have an innate capacity to know God through direct experience.
The “Christ” is that part of God that is in every person. There is a spark of divinity within all people, just as there was in Jesus.
Praying for the highest outcome works.
We are here to set a positive example and be a role model for others.
We are here to make the world a better place.
Five Basic Unity Principles
- God is All: God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power.
- Divinity Within: We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person.
- Co-creation: We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
- Prayer & Meditation: Through affirmative prayer and meditation, we connect with God and bring forth the good.
- Action: Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them in everyday life.
We celebrate the beautiful spectrum of human experience. We stand for peace in our hearts, our homes, and our world. We believe that true peace begins within each individual as we align with the spirit of love and understanding. We are committed to non-violence and to being a presence of reconciliation and compassion in our local and global community.
Greening Congregations Collaborative
Caring for Whidbey Island and our planet is a spiritual practice. Part of the Greening Congregations Collaborative, we strive to reduce our ecological footprint through sustainable practices, environmental education, and active stewardship of our natural surroundings. We seek to live in balance with the Earth, honoring the sacredness of all creation.
